General Questions
What is the enameling process used to add color to Guy Harvey Jewelry?
We use the age old enameling process that was famously perfected by
Faberge and Tiffany to bring color to Guy Harvey Jewelry. The technique
used for most pieces is known as "Basse-taille" from the French word
meaning "low-cut". The surface of the metal is decorated with a low
relief design which can be seen through translucent and transparent
enamels. The process used for other items including the Artist's
Collections Sea Turtle, Starfish and Butterfly, is known as
Plique-à-jour which is French for "letting in daylight". It is a
vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in openings
like stained glass.
What does "Relic Finish" Mean? Is it real Silver?
The metal used is sterling silver and is marked as such with 925 on the
reverse side. To achieve our Relic finish, we intentionally oxidize the
surface. Then our craftsmen hand detail the high areas with a very
light abrasive wheel. This is done to provide a higher level of contrast
between the high and low relief design elements on the piece, which
brings out the beauty of the design.
Are the 18k pieces solid gold, or gold plated?
18k gold pieces are solid gold. We do not sell any jewelry pieces that are gold plated.
You should not wear jewelry while participating in sports, swimming, working with machinery etc.
Due to the natural variations of hand finished products, the degree of oxidation and resulting darkness will vary from piece to piece. Reasonable variations are to be expected and contribute to the uniqueness and hand finished quality of each piece of oxidized Guy Harvey Jewelry. Over time, normal wear or polishing can diminish or remove the level of oxidation. For a reasonable service charge, your valued piece may be re-oxidized to restore this finish. Your Guy Harvey Jewelry has been designed and manufactured to the
highest quality standards. Though it contains anti-tarnishing agents,
all sterling silver eventually will patina with age and with the exposure
to various elements. We recommend that you do not wear your jewelry in
the shower, hot tub, sauna, ocean or swimming pool. The high chlorine
and/or bromine contents used in swimming pools and hot tubs will
accelerate the tarnishing of Sterling Silver jewelry and could
compromise the integrity of the metal. Minerals in your water source can
also accelerate the tarnishing of Sterling Silver jewelry. Also the
chemical makeup and oils of your skin and lotions may contribute to the
tarnishing of Sterling Silver jewelry. Apply makeup and hair spray prior
to putting on your jewelry. When not being worn, store your jewelry in
the protective pouch it was shipped with. You may clean enameled jewelry with mild soap (not detergent) and warm water, rinse and polish with soft cloth but dry it thoroughly before storage to prevent residual water stains.Proper care and maintenance
will preserve the beauty of your pieces. Periodic examination of clasps
and settings to ensure a secure fit is recommended. Ultrasonic cleaners and chemical dips should be avoided.
Care and Cleaning of Enameled Sterling Silver Pieces
You may clean enameled jewelry with mild soap (not detergent) and warm
water, rinse and polish with soft cloth but dry it thoroughly before
storage to prevent residual water stains. It should not be left in an
ultrasonic cleaner. Be careful to not bend or flex the item as it could
cause damage to the frame where pique-a-jour enamel is suspended.
Remember that enamel is glass and therefore will behave like it, while
it is rare, it could break if dropped or hit against a hard surface. Ultrasonic cleaners and chemical dips should be avoided.
Cleaning Pearls
Gently wipe with a soft damp cloth. Do not soak in a cleaning solution and do not use solvents as it could affect the luster.
Cleaning Gemstones
For faceted stones, place in a gentle, liquid jewelry cleaning solution
for a couple of minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water and air dry.
